PlayStation VR2 tech specs revealed

What precisely is PlayStation VR 2?

Sony’s PSVR 2 is the successor to the PSVR device. The new PS5-exclusive headset offers higher resolution, new eye-tracking technology, a larger field of vision, and a new controller-headset tracking technique to replace the previous (and occasionally faulty) LED PlayStation Camera approach.

PSVR 2 features

1. See-through view: The PSVR 2 has front cameras that allow users to switch between games and their surroundings. According to Sony, there is no recording option for a see-through view.

2. Broadcasting: Gamers can broadcast themselves playing VR with PS5 HD Camera at the same time.

3. Customized playing areas: Defining the play area has always been a challenge for VR headsets. Some use expensive tracking technologies, while others just keep you fixed on the location to prevent accidental damage or injury. PSVR 2 will use cameras and Sense controllers to map play areas. The system will inform users if they approach too close to a pre-defined border.

4. Cinematic mode: PSVR 2 allows gamers to play PS5 games in cinematic mode. This effectively beams the PS5 system into a VR headset, broadcasting gaming and media in 1080p at up to 120 Hz.

5. Toggle Rendering: This is a cool way of saying that the new headset will use eye-tracking technology to assist players with menu navigation and other tasks. In a video game, the resolution of the display goes with the player’s eyes, which are directed, replicating how human vision works in real life. Sony’s VR headsets offer a unique experience.

What is the distinction between PSVR 2 and PSVR specs?

Sony’s PlayStation VR 2 was released in February 2021, with the tagline “dramatic increases in performance and engagement.” The technology offers a notable improvement in per-eye resolution, HDR capability, and a marginal expansion of the field of view. As a result, it tracks better and has more reliable performance because of the headset’s integrated cameras. Moreover, it introduces eye tracking for the first time to Sony’s VR headsets, enabling foveated rendering. Also, they have incorporated a lot of their DualSense controller research into the new system, resulting in improved haptic feedback in both the headset and the Sense controllers.

Here are the specs for PSVR 2:

  • Resolution: 2,000 x 2,040 each eye
  • Display: OLED HDR
  • Refresh rate: 90Hz, 120Hz
  • 110° Field of View
  • Tracking: Four cameras for the controllers and headgear, a six-axis motion sensor, and an infrared camera for eye tracking.
  • Haptics: Headset and Controller
  • Sound: 3.5mm
  • Connection: USB

Here are the specs for PSVR:

  • Resolution: 960 x 1080 per eye
  • Display: OLED
  • Refresh rate: 90Hz, 120Hz
  • 110° Field of View
  • Tracking: Six-axis motion sensor with LED monitoring via PlayStation Move.
  • Haptics: Controller only
  • Sound: 3.5mm
  • Connection: USB and HDMI

Conclusion

PSVR 2 will not only look better than PSVR, but it also tracks better. The initial PlayStation VR system depended on LED tracking from the console and a PlayStation Camera. In order to provide a far more reliable experience, PSVR 2 has cameras built into the headset. Also, the new generation will introduce eye tracking to Sony’s VR devices for the first time, enabling toggle rendering.
